How to keep you and your flatmates safe

Knowing how to keep you and your neighbours safe from fire while living in Halls is a priority.

In your Welcome Induction, you'll have read everything you need to know about fire safety. Now you're settled into Halls, we encourage you to take less than 2 minutes to remind yourself of our key fire safety messages.

Here's what you need to know:

🚬 No smoking in Halls - University of Liverpool operates a no smoking policy across all buildings on campus including Halls including vapes/e-cigarettes. Go outside and use a designated smoking area instead.

🚪 Do not wedge fire doors open - fire doors act as a barrier to prevent the spread of fire and smoke and keep you and your neighbours safe. Keep fire doors closed. If you notice any damage/issues with any fire doors, please report this to reception immediately.

🧯 Don't mess around with fire equipment - not only is this a breach of the University's Health & Safety rules but it puts you and others at risk in the event of a fire. Tampering with equipment will result in a disciplinary meeting with your Hall Warden and even a fine.

What counts as fire equipment?

  • Fire Doors
  • Lifts
  • Emergency Phones
  • Fire Blanket
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Smoke and Heat Detectors
  • Safety Notices
  • Emergency Exit Signage

🔥 Naked flames are not permitted in Halls e.g. candles, lighters, incense - items with a naked flame are prohibited.

  • Mains operated fairy lights
  • Halogen bulbs
  • Chip Pans
  • Deep fat fryers
  • Electric, Gas and Paraffin Heaters
  • Block adaptors
  • Camp stoves/mobile hotplates

🔌 Don't overload extension leads - this can cause an over surge in power and result in fire. All your electrical appliances must have a fused 3 pin plug or must use the correct travel adaptor.

🍳Never leave food unattended while cooking - food, especially greasy food, can cause fire easily so never walk away from your cooking.

🧼 Keep your kitchen clean - keep grill trays clean and air fryers as super flammable. Also ensure that waste is regularly disposed of to ensure minimum amounts of flammable material.

🔋 Battery fairy lights only - mains powered fairy lights, LED strip lights, halogen bulbs are not permitted in Halls due to fire risk.

📧 Notice a fault with fire equipment? - don't ignore it. Please report any concerns or faults to your Hall's reception team as soon as possible.

🌞Aerosols - ventilate your space before using deodorant or hairspray. Always keep your aerosols in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat source.

To make sure everything is as safe as possible, there will be monthly checks on fire equipment in your flat. Don't worry, you don't need to be in for these checks to take place.
