How to keep you and your flatmates safe

Knowing how to keep you and your neighbours safe from fire while living in Halls is super important

Take less than 2 minutes to read this article and find out everything you need to know for the year ahead...

Here's what you need to know:

No smoking in Halls University of Liverpool operates a no smoking policy across all buildings on campus including Halls including vapes/e-cigarettes. Go outside and use a designated smoking area instead.

Don't overload extension leads - this can cause an over surge in power and result in fire. All your electrical appliances must have a fused 3 pin plug or must use the correct travel adaptor.

Never leave food unattended while cooking - food, especially greasy food, can cause fire easily so never walk away from your cooking.

Keep your kitchen clean - keep grill trays clean and air fryers as super flammable

Don't wedge fire doors open - these are in place to keep you safe. Be sure to check that all fire doors are closed at all times.

Candles are not permitted in Halls - items with a naked flame (lighters, candles, incense) cannot be used in Halls.

Battery fairy lights only - mains powered fairy lights, LED strip lights, halogen bulbs are not permitted in Halls due to fire risk.

Notice a fault with fire equipment? - report it to your Hall's team as soon as possible

Aerosols - ventilate your space before using deodorant or hairspray. Always keep your aerosols in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat source

Don't mess around with fire equipment - not only is this a breach of the University's Health & Safety rules but it puts you and others at risk in the event of a fire. Tampering with equipment will result in a disciplinary meeting with your Hall Warden and even a fine.

What counts as fire equipment?

  • Fire Doors
  • Lifts
  • Emergency Phones
  • Fire Blanket
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Smoke and Heat Detectors
  • Safety Notices
  • Emergency Exit Signage

To make sure everything is as safe as possible, there will be monthly checks on fire equipment in your flat. Don't worry, you don't need to be in for these checks to take place.
