Your guide to: Cleaning your bathroom

Posted 3 months ago

Time to make your bathroom shine!

Let’s be honest, cleaning your bathroom will not be top of the to-do list when it comes to living in Halls but, trust us, it doesn’t need to be as boring or as hard as you think.

Whether you have a shared bathroom or ensuite, you ideally want to clean it once per week to save unpleasant smells or any mould.

Before you get started, remember to:

·       Wear gloves when using cleaning products and materials

·       Never mix cleaning products

·       Not use the same items used to wipe toilets, sinks and floors in other areas

·       Check the instructions on the back of cleaning products

·       Ventilate the space as you clean

🚿 Make that shower shine

Using a bathroom spray, wipe the basin of the shower and around the shower tray to keep it shiny and clean. If you don’t do this regularly, grime will build up and it’ll take a lot more elbow grease to get rid later down the line.

Don’t forget to remove any hair you can see from the basin and plug.

💦 Wipe the sink area

Declutter around the sink area and get rid of any empties before spraying and wiping the sink – scrub the toothpaste marks and make it sparkle! Don’t forget the mirror and shelf too.

🚽Toilet time

A quick way to clean your toilet is to use the toilet brush provided. Put your brush down the toilet to make the water level low, then pour your cleaning product into the toilet before flushing. Remove the brush and there you have it!

Give the toilet seat, handle and surrounding surfaces a spray and wipe to reduce bacteria.

🦠Wipe the floor

Keep your ensuite floor clean and hygienic by wiping it once per week.

🧽Living with a shared bathroom?

If you don't have an ensuite, the domestic team will give your shared bathroom a clean twice a month. In-between visits, it’s up to you and your flatmates to stay on top of the cleaning.

First things first, wear gloves and open a window if you can. Using a cloth and bathroom cleaning spray, wipe down the main surfaces starting with the sink, countertops, shower then lastly the toilet (always clean the dirtiest area last).

Avoid harsh chemicals with fumes, especially when cleaning in shared spaces.

Be sure to clean and dry your cloth after use. Wash your hands afterwards and you're good to go!

🔧 Report any maintenance issues

If you notice condensation appears or mould, report this to your reception team as there may be an issue with the ventilation. Avoid tampering with the vent yourself as it can affect the rest of your flat’s ventilation.

Is your shower draining slowing or overflowing? Report it the reception team as soon as possible. Slow drainage will only ever lead to a blocked drain so the quicker you report it, the better.
