RA CPD session: Prevent Training

Posted 1 day ago

Taking place on the 16th October

This mandatory RA CPD session is on the Prevent Duty, and will be led by Declan Sammin from Liverpool City Council on Tuesday 16th October. Please note that this session is for Residential Advisers or Private Residential Advisers only who have not completed this training within the last three years (more details below).

Prevent is part of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy. The University has a duty under the government’s Prevent Duty Guidance to safeguard our student community against the risk of radicalisation, and takes a proactive, safeguarding-focused approach to this. Part of this involves providing training to key front-line staff in what to do if they have concerns for a student’s welfare, for any reason.

This session will give you more information about Prevent and your role as RAs in this safeguarding approach. It will also give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

The session will take place on Microsoft TEAMS on Thursday 16th October, 6-7pm. You will be sent a calendar invitation to this session if you are a new RA or PRA, or a continuing RA or PRA who our records show needs to attend.

If you have undertaken this training within the past three years you are not required to attend, however you may find a refresher helpful. If you will not be attending for this reason, please contact the Halls Life team with details of when you undertook this training so this can be recorded.

As a mandatory session, all RAs are expected to attend unless they have received this training within the past three years. If you are unable to attend for any reason, please contact the Halls Life team asap with further details.

An outline of the session from Declan Sammin:

“This PREVENT awareness raising session, will explain the objectives of the Governments Counter Terrorism “Contest Strategy” and how the PREVENT strand works towards its overall objectives, which are, the reduction of risk to the UK and its overseas interests from the threat of terrorism and to enable people, to go about their daily lives freely and with confidence.

It will highlight the differences between Terrorism and extremism, the radicalisation journey, along with the current terror threat level to the UK, it will also explain why the PREVENT strand is so important in helping to reduce that threat.

It will provide some explanation about the emergence and threat from the Far Right and other emerging Mixed, Unclear or Unstable ideologies and outline some of the indicators that may be displayed by those who are or might be, vulnerable to radicalisation.

Most importantly it will explain the local referral process for anyone that you may have concerns about.”
