Making good recycling habits in halls will reduce you and your flatmates' environmental impact and will save your recyclables from going in the wrong bin. Recycling well will also contribute towards creating electricity, heat and fuel and reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill ⚡
Don't forget, this month's Recycling Audits will take place on Tuesday 12th November. Your flat's bins will be scored on how well you and your flatmates recycle - find out more here!
To reduce waste and increase our level of recycling in halls, here's what you should think about before you throw...
What bin is for what? 💚
Recycling in Halls might look a little different from how you recycle at home so here's your reminder of what goes where.
In your kitchen you’ll find 4 bins:
- A household general waste bin for your day to day rubbish and non-recyclables such as tissues, tin foil, non-recyclable plastics e.g. plastic bags
- A mixed recycling bin for paper, recyclable plastic e.g. plastic bottles, cardboard, tins, cans etc
- A food waste caddy for food waste e.g. leftover scraps, vegetable peelings, teabags, bread, pasta/rice, cooked and uncooked meat
- A glass bin e.g. bottles, jars (remember, broken glass must go in the broken glass box under your sink)
Remember, batteries cannot be thrown in your general waste bin. In your Hall reception you'll find a battery recycling bin!
How can I be sure I'm recycling properly? 🤔
- CHECK that the item is actually recyclable. There might some things that you’re throwing into the recycling bin that can’t actually be recycled such as plastic bags. Click here to find out more about recycling labels.
- RINSE your items. Finished a tin of soup? Give it a quick rinse under the tap and dry before popping in the bin. Dirty items will contaminate your bin and spoil the other recyclable items in there.
- USE the correct bin – generally you will be able to pop any recyclable items into the mixed recycling bin except for glass! Please use the glass bin for bottles, jars etc
Your 15 second guide to knowing what goes where...
Take just less than a half a minute to remind yourself of the ins and outs of what goes where in your kitchen bins. You'll also find posters in your kitchen if you need another reminder!
