Introducing Sustainable Halls...

Here at Halls Life, we are passionate about finding ways to live more sustainably in Halls 💚

We’ve teamed up with the Guild of Students and the University’s Sustainability Team to bring exclusive events, competitions and opportunities to help residents learn more about sustainable living this year.

Your time in Halls is an opportunity to learn about how you can make valuable, positive impacts on the environment and encourage others around you to make better choices. The skills that you learn here in Halls are ones that you can take onto your next accommodation. This means that your small actions today can continue to make a big impact no matter where you live.

Here’s how you can get involved this year…

Throughout the year we'll have different events and activities to get stuck into. These may be activities that you take part in yourself, with your flatmates or even as a Hall. Every time you get involved, you'll help increase your Hall's score on the leader board bringing you closer to that end of year prize.

Whether you're moving into Halls for second semester or you've been living here since September, it's really never too late to get stuck in.

Flat Recycling Audits 🥫

In November 2025 and March 2026, the Guild’s Sustainability team will carry out what we call ‘Recycling Audits’ (where they check your kitchen’s bins to see if you and your flatmates are recycling properly)! Your flat will be left a scorecard to let you know how much of a great job you’re doing as well as feedback. Kitchens who score well will be left a prize!

Recycle well and help your Hall score well and climb the leader board to be in with a chance of winning an end of year prize. We’ll let you know exactly when the audit is taking place.

Grown your own greens, nature walks, crafts & clothes repair sessions🌿

The Guild’s Sustainability team will be bringing green-inspired events exclusively for Halls students all year round. There’ll be something for everyone to get involved in from growing your own greens, reusable period pad making, learning how to repair your own clothes, enjoying a nature walk or hopping on a bike ride. Stay tuned with the Guild’s Give it a Go page when you arrive to book on. Just filter for 'Sustainable Halls'.

These events are for both students living in University of Liverpool Halls and University Approved Halls.

Monthly Sew-Cials 🧵

Catch up with your latest sewing project, or learn the basics of sewing at our monthly sew-cials. Sit back, relax and chat with other halls students!

The first Sew-cial of 2026 is coming up on Wednesday 4th February in Crown Place. Save the date for the rest of the monthly sew-cials on:

  • Wednesday 4th March
  • Wednesday 15th April
  • Tuesday 5th May

Monthly reads 📖

The Sustainable Halls team will release themed monthly articles. Whether you're on the 699 or waiting in the queue for your parcel, you can catch up on this months read on Halls Life.

Bike Hire & repair workshops 🚲

Free, regular bike repair workshops will be taking place at Greenbank Student Village. If your bike is in need of some TLC, just bring it along to the Bikiosk at Greenbank where the Peloton team will advice and tips on how to keep your bike in top condition.

Hire a bike at Greenbank for free! Whether you want to find the best cycle routes in the city, explore what Liverpool has to see or find a more sustainable way to travel to campus (first come, first served).

The first workshop is coming up on Monday 2nd February, 8am-2pm in Greenbank's bikiosk! Click here for all the workshop dates!

Earn your Sustainable Halls stamp 🌍

When you come along to any Sustainable Halls event, you'll receive a stamp on your loyalty card. Each stamp will bring your Hall closer to being crowned winners at the end of the year, plus you'll have proof of your contribution towards making your Halls an even more sustainable place!

Earn 4 stamps for a free Union Brew hot drink and 8 stamps for a free Sustainable Halls kitchen pack!

Hall Quizzes 💚

Plus you can expect quizzes (with prizes) to test your knowledge on all things sustainability. Don't worry we're not here to see how well you score, instead we just encourage you to learn something new and be in with a chance of winning a prize!

The first online Sustainable Halls quiz is now live until 30th January! Test your winter sustainability knowledge to be in with a chance of winning a hot drink at Union Brew or UoL t-shirt and hoodie bundle!

Be crowned Sustainable Halls winner 2025/26 🏆

The score from your Hall's recycling audits as well as your participation in quizzes and Sustainable Halls activities will contribute towards your Hall's overall score on the leader board. We'll also count your Sustainable Halls loyalty stamps towards your Hall's score meaning every little helps.

Even if you've just moved into Halls in January 2026, you're still in the competition! Get involved and improve your Hall's score and make a difference. Click here to see where your Hall is in the leader board so far!

In May 2026, a winning hall will be announced and awarded with a special prize for all residents!

Halls Student Committees (HSCs) 💭

Each Hall has a Hall Student Committee (HSC) made up of residents who work together to enhance community in halls and plan exciting events and activities. If you want to make an impact on sustainable decision making in your HSC. Details on how to sign up to your HSC coming soon!
