Exploring Liverpool: Wintery Walks

Posted 1 week ago

Your sign to wrap up for a winter walk ⛄

Oh the weather outside might be frightful...🥶

The cosy, winter season is officially here! There's no doubt that the weather can be colder and wetter during this time of year but here's some inspiration for your next winter walk when the sun is next shining.

After a whirlwind of a semester, there's no better time to get out, slow down and see what Liverpool has to offer in all its green spaces, cycle routes and woodland walks. A winter walk or wander can blow away the cobwebs, help focus your concentration for any exams and help you get to know the city a little better. So whether you're taking a pre-christmas break stroll or saving this for the new year, don't forget to wrap up!

If you're travelling by public transport, don't forget to check online for any changes in timetables during the Christmas period and New Year!

Sefton Park

Sefton Park is just minutes from Greenbank Student Village. You can travel from campus to Sefton Park via 699 bus or 80a, 75, 86 Arriva bus routes. Find out more about getting to the park here.

Home to 200 acres and being a Grade I listed park, it's definitely well worth a visit.

Ness Gardens

Ness Gardens is home to 64 acres of plants, wildlife and stunning landscapes (especially during the frosty, wintery months)! As a University of Liverpool student, you can explore the gardens for just £1 before you stop off for a hot chocolate & cake in the café. Ness Gardens is located in the Wirral so you'll need to take public transport. Find out more here.

Festival Gardens

This part of the city was made into the UK's first festival garden in the 1980s following. The idea behind the Festival Gardens was to encourage tourism back into the city of Liverpool following industrialism. The area attracted millions of visitors over the years before it sadly closed in 1997.

Around 15 years ago, the area was re-invested into and now has gardens, waterfalls and woodland trails that lead you onto the Otterspool promenade. It's definitely well worth a visit for a picnic (but save this for the summer months!). It's easiest to reach Festival Gardens via train from Liverpool city centre in just under 10 minutes. Find out how to get here by Merseyrail.

Greenbank Park

Greenbank Park truly gives all winter aesthetics with its lake, walled gardens and of course local café the Watering Can (perfect if you need a warming up with a cuppa!). Remember, the park is only small so it doesn't take long to get around so it's well worth visiting both Sefton Park and Greenbank Park on the same day as they're just minutes from each other.

Albert Dock

Name a more magical setting for a winter walk! The Light Trail in the Albert Dock is the perfect place to get in the festive spirit this holiday season. Be sure to wrap up warm as it's super windy at the waterfront.

Georgian Quarter

Just minutes walk from campus is Liverpool's Georgian Quarter. This area has all the cobbled streets, restaurants, bars, pubs and Georgian townhouses that give the area a very festive feel at this time of year. Hope Street sits in the heart of the Georgian Quarter and has so many cosy pubs, bars and cafés. You'll also find both cathedrals sit at either end of Hope Street too.
