October marks Black History Month which is a celebration of black history, arts and culture. Each year has a different focus and for October 2025, we're celebrating the theme of Standing Firm in Power and Pride.

Conversation that acknowledges, celebrates and remembers Black history, community and culture is important all year-round but throughout October, you'll find celebrations across the city and university for you to get involved in. Here's a roundup of what's coming up!

Black Fest 

Liverpool is hosting Black Fest, a festival of cultural diversity this October. Celebrating all things black music and dance, food, history, art, theatre and wellness, there's plenty so see this month.

Black Fest is held across various locations across the city and so is a really great way to get your bearings and explore Liverpool at the same time. Head to Culture Liverpool to see the full programme.

What better way to mark this year's theme of power and pride than to remember the legacies of Dorothy Kuya, Thomas Sankara and Ken Saro-Wiwa. If you don't know why they play such an important part of Black History, go check out our Sustainable Halls article.

Sit back and catch the Guild's screening dedicated to Black History Month from 6pm on 13th October in the Guild's Cinema room - go check it out!

Visit: Harlem of Europe

This exhibition is right here on campus in the famous Red Brick Building! Did you know that this building is the Victoria Gallery and Museum and hosts exhibitions and events all year long?

From 11th October, you can pop along to the free exhibition which celebrates black musicians from 1950's and 60's from Liverpool's Toxteth area. Go discover how this generation helped shape modern British music.

Did you know that the Liverpool black community is the oldest in Europe? In honour of this, the museum of Liverpool have put together a Black History Trail so that you can discover the city's history on your next visit - click here to see the trail.
