Get room inspection ready

Posted 8 hours ago

It's time for our teams to carry out room checks

Now you've had time to settle in and put your own stamp on your room, it's time for our Halls teams to make sure that everything is as safe as possible.

In Crown Place, Greenbank, Melville, Tudor Vine, Philharmonic and Dover Court, our teams will pop by to carry out a quick health and safety check of your bedroom and ensuite (if you have one).

The inspection takes no longer than 5 minutes per room and you don't need to be in to have your room inspected. If you're not home, don't worry as the team will drop by and do the check without you there.

If our team spot anything that's prohibited in Halls, the item will be taken during the inspection. You'll be able to collect it at the end of the year but to save yourself the worry, here's a reminder of what we'll be looking for:

🕯️Candles & incense are no-go in Halls

Anything with a naked flame is a fire risk. Swap it with a reed diffuser so you can still make your room smell nice!

💡Fairy Lights & LED strip lights

We all love a cosy fairy light but make sure it's battery operated only. Be careful not to mark the walls when putting up too!

🔥Heaters

As cosy season creeps in, it might be tempting to grab an extra heater but unfortunately these are a fire risk, including heated clothes airers. If you room is feeling cold, chat to the reception team so that we can come and take a look for any potential repairs.

🫕 Kettles, coffee machines, cooking equipment in bedrooms

Appliances are for the kitchen only, not bedrooms (unless you live in a studio).

🔌Adaptors and extension leads

Only UK/EU compliant adaptors/extensions leads are permitted and electronic appliances must not exceed 230V/50Hz. We don't want to see overloading either! Unplug the devices you're not using to save overheating and energy.

⚠️ Trip hazards

A clean and tidy bedroom is always a good idea but especially for making sure that you have a clear exit in case of an emergency (this also applies to your corridor which must be clear) Use boxes, storage containers and shelves to keep your items tidy and free from the floor!

🚭 Signs of smoking or vaping

Smoking and vaping is not permitted in Halls, neither is covering up the detector in your room. Remember, this can result in a warning or fine.

We all have a responsibility for keeping Halls a safe place. Here's a reminder of how you can keep you and your flatmates safe from fire.

🫧 Cleanliness

Cleaning might not be top of the to do list but it is super important for looking after your bedroom. Open the windows, ventilate the space, dust and vacuum regularly to keep it fresh and clean. If you spot signs of mould, condensation or blocked drains, report it to reception so that we can take a look for any repairs needed.

Rooms that are not kept to a reasonable level of tidiness and hygiene may result in a cleaning fine so it's best to clean little and often to stay on top of things. Check out our beginner's guide to cleaning here.

Did you know that University of Liverpool Halls are affiliated with Universities UK Accommodation code of practice?

Aligning with UUK's standards means that we meet certain standards for safety and overall quality in our Halls. This gives residents the peace of mind that we meet a range of criteria around health and wellbeing, fire safety, environmental health and more. Check out what the code means here.
