Greenbank resident, Abi, shares her advice on living independently while at Halls...
One of the exciting parts of university life is the prospect of moving away from home and living independently! On move in day, you are guaranteed to see cars packed with boxes and belongings all heading to halls. Whether you are happy or feel nervous it’s ok! Here are some tips on how to embrace your new home once you arrive and settle into university life…
Remind yourself you aren’t alone
The idea of living independently may feel daunting, you have to face problems and do new things on your own for the first time. While that is true, take time to remind yourself that all new students are going through the same experience as you. The key to eliminating these worries is by making connections, if you are confused or don’t know where something is ask your flatmates, staff or people on your course. I have found that when I have been honest with others, they have also been facing the same problems as me.
Practise your skills
Whether learning how to cook or doing your own laundry and shopping, there a plenty of things you need to do so you stay on top of everything alongside studying. There are numerous ways to stay organised from setting reminders on your phone to creating to do lists and timetables can help structure your day or week, so you don’t forget to buy food or run out of clean clothes for your 9am lecture the next day!
Getting into an organised routine can be difficult however, it is definitely worthwhile!
Like most students you may initially stick to a diet of pesto pasta but, trying new recipes can help grow your confidence in the kitchen and give your body the nutrition it needs. My favourite simple meal – Halloumi Fajitas is quick and easy and can last over multiple days.
Ingredients
- 1 large onion
- 1 Courgette
- 2 Bell Peppers
- 1 Halloumi cheese
- Fajita Seasoning
- Wraps
- Salsa - optional
Instructions
- Slice the Onion and start frying
- Slice the peppers and add to the pan
- after a few minutes slice the courgette and add to the pan
- 4Once the vegetables begin to go soft slice the Halloumi
- Add the Halloumi and fry for a few more minutes
- open the Fajita seasoning and add to the pan
- mix the seasoning with the veg and Halloumi – you may need to add a little splash of water to the pan to stop the seasoning sticking to the bottom
- put mixture into a wrap and salsa then, enjoy!

Managing money
Even if you aren’t good with numbers or maths budgeting and being in control of your finances is important at university. Setting a weekly budget is common amongst students and has helped me gain independence in terms of managing and knowledge of my money. Another popular method is to write out shopping lists each week, so you don’t end up buying things you won’t use. Take into consideration any extra costs that may come up like gym memberships, nights out or society events when you first start out at university so, you will be more prepared for where you want to spend your money.
Apply these independence tips to make the most out of your time in halls!
