It’s November, which means it’s time to start thinking about recycling!
Our first recycling audit of the year is taking place on Tuesday 11th November, so we’ll help you brush up on your recycling skills to maximise your chances of scoring well!
We’ve also got some suggestions for how you can encourage your flatmates to do the best they can, plus information about some exciting events coming up this month!
Recycling Audits ♻️
Twice a year, our team of student auditors head out to every hall to check out how well everyone’s recycling. During these audits, we check each bin and give you an overall score based on whether you’re using the bins correctly – those with a low score get tips on how they can improve, and those with a high score get some chocolates to say well done!
Hopefully you’re now familiar with your four bins and how to use them correctly. If you need some pointers, check out the recycling poster which should be on the notice board in your kitchen. If you don’t have a poster, your hall’s reception will be able to get one for you. This month’s quiz is a great way to learn some tips too (plus we’ve got some great prizes on offer for taking part!)
Find out more about the audits here.
Getting your flatmates on board 🤝
We know what it can be like – you’re putting in all the effort to make sure your rubbish goes to the right place, and it seems like your flatmates are doing everything they can to undo your hard work!
If this sounds like you, then check out our tips to get your flatmates on board the sustainability train!
- Point them to your recycling poster: recycling schemes can vary significantly in what types of waste can be recycled, so if they’re used to a different scheme, maybe they haven’t figured out the new rules yet. Your kitchen’s recycling poster has all the info they need to get their recycling right.
- Correct, don’t nag: If you see a flatmate put something in the wrong place, don’t make a big deal out of it. We also wouldn’t recommend the passive-aggressive approach! Instead, just explain that the item must go in a certain place. Rubbish isn’t a reason for an argument!
- Take the lead: If you’re confident in knowing what goes where, tell your flatmates that you’re happy to help them if they’re ever unsure. Leading by example is a great way to get people to do the right thing!
These are some ideas to get you started, but if you’ve got any of your own, we’d love to hear from you! Let us know how you’ve got people stuck into recycling by tagging @livunihalls on Instagram, or emailing LGsustainability@liverpool.ac.uk!
