We caught up with students Justie and India who were Halls Student Committee members for 2024/25. We asked them all things living in Halls and joining their HSC so let's hear what they had to say...
1. Tell us about yourself...
Justie: Hi, my name is Justie Ejeta and I’m going into my second year studying Accounting & Finance. I lived in Vine Court during my first year, which became such a big part of my university journey and call be biased but must be the best University Hall hands down. I’m passionate about community, creativity, and making the most out of every opportunity, whether that’s through my degree, my faith, or the activities I get involved in at uni.
India: Hello! My name is India Goodey; I am a Biomedical Science student soon going into my second year who spent the last academic year (2024-2025) living in Crown Place as someone who was completely new to the Liverpool area and knew no one at the University. Living in halls is such a core part of the university experience and I love how hall life brings people together- from late night chats to spontaneous flat dinners it is what makes Liverpool feel like a home away from home.
2. What made you want to join your HSC?
Justie: I wanted to join because community is so important to me. Moving into halls can feel overwhelming, and I wanted to help create a space where people felt welcomed, included, and connected. It was also a chance to develop my leadership skills and contribute positively to everyone’s experience at halls. Fun fact: the first training happened on my birthday which was fun!:)
India: I wanted to help shape the new community I was living in and meet more people in Crown Place. Joining the HSC felt like an amazing way to make hall life more inclusive, fun, supportive and homely. Previously seeing how committees back in sixth form had worked hard to organise events and promote wellbeing, I wanted to have the opportunity to be able to be part of a committee myself.
3. So how did you find being on a committee?
Justie: It was a really rewarding experience. I enjoyed working with such a diverse group of people, planning events, and seeing our ideas come to life. It wasn’t always easy balancing committee work with studies, but it taught me a lot about teamwork, organisation, and the value of showing up for others.
India: It was genuinely rewarding. You learn a lot about teamwork, perspective, communication and adapting to when things don’t quite go to plan. The sense of achievement after organising an event where others had a lovely time with the reassurance all were catered for and welcome made all the effort worth it! It’s also a great way to put yourself out there and meet new people.
4. What's your favourite memory of being on the HSC?
Justie: One of my favourite memories must be the diamond painting event and Vine Court ball. It was so nice to see everyone come together, laugh, and make memories that I know people will cherish.
India: My favourite memory of being on Crown Place HSC was seeing how successful our ‘Happy Quizmas’ event was. It was heart warming to see everyone dressed up, laughing and working together. It was a beautiful way for our hall to celebrate the end of the first semester and the run up to Christmas for those who were celebrating.
5. What advice would you give someone who is thinking of joining their HSC this year?
Justie: Don’t be afraid to step up and bring your ideas forward! You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room, just be genuine and willing to contribute. Remember, the little things you do can make a huge difference to someone’s university experience. Also, enjoy it! It’s a unique chance to connect, grow, and leave your mark
India: My advice would be to go for it and don't make assumptions that you have to be a certain person or have experience to be able to join. You will also have a couple of amazing residential advisers in the meetings to help make people's ideas a reality and provide advice if need be. Be yourself, speak up with ideas- your perspective matters listen to others and have fun! If you are nervous to join, I recommend joining with a flatmate/ friend in your halls as then you already know someone!
6. Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Justie: Being on the HSC was one of the highlights of my first year. It reminded me of the importance of service, community, and joy in the small things. It also inspired me to continue in this path, I’ll be starting as a Residential Adviser (RA) this September, and I know that my time on the HSC helped prepare me for this next role. To anyone starting this journey, embrace it fully, you’ll grow, learn, and make memories that last far beyond halls.
India: Being part of Crown Place HSC was something I greatly enjoyed. As I mentioned before halls are such a core part of the first-year experience, joining your HSC makes you feel more connected. By joining you also are part of a team who organise events that help others connect, settle in and feel supported. You never know what lovely people you will meet, the memories you will make or the skills you will gain! I highly recommend anyone who is interested in joining their hall HSC does.
